Stephen Douglas Garber, recently turned 67, passed away on 6/1/2026. The son of Irwin and Lila Garber, Steve graduated from local area school, Gateway Sn. High back in 1977 as a resident of Monroeville, Pa. Stephen had an affinity for music learning to play the flute, clarinet and saxophone. While he studied with local musicians he also studied music taking courses at Carnegie Mellon University. He enlisted in the Navy, 1980, and scoring high marks (4.0) in his audition with the Navy band at Annapolis, attended the Navy School of Music in Little Creek, Virginia. Stephen went on to play with the 7th Fleet Jazz Band and other ensembles in Japan, even doing ship board duty aboard the USS Blue Ridge. He later was transferred to the San Diego Navy Band and finished his tour of duty with the Navy there. He moved for a short while to Concord, North Carolina and then returned to the Pittsburgh area, Trafford specifically, working as an engineer after graduating from Penn Tech Institute. He designed and did troubleshooting of electrical circuits for local engineering firms, Turbine Control Service Associates and before that at Tollgrade. After retiring Stephen went on and continued his music passion learning composing, song writing and making music digitally. He is survived by his two brothers, Bruce and Richard, and was also a very good friend of Monica for about 20 years whom he was close friends with until his sudden passing. He frequently attended church at Shoresh David (Pittsburgh area Messianic congregation), performing regularly there and was a committed Christian in his beliefs since his early days at Carnegie Mellon University.
