Ronald H. Penkert, age 74, of Trafford passed away on Thursday August 18, 2022 in the Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville. Ron was born on April 5, 1948 in Wilkinsburg the son of the late Otto and Marcella (Sweda) Penkert. Ron started working at Foodland and retired as a meat cutter from Giant Eagle Grocery Store in Monroeville and was a member of the St. Regis Church in Trafford. Ron was the star pitcher for Trafford High School while in school. He could pitch a ball at 93 mph. Some of the most well attended games were when Ron would pitch against Bobby Moose of Export as they were equally matched in their pitching speed and abilities. The Pittsburgh Pirates wanted to draft Ron for the minor leagues immediately after high school graduation, but Ron promised his parents he would go to college. The Pirates gave him a scholarship to the University of Iowa to pitch for their outstanding team. This was done with the understanding that he would play baseball for the Pirates when he completed college. After two years, Ron tore ligaments in his pitching arm from stressful overuse. The damage was not totally repairable at the time. He left Iowa and returned home to marry his loving girlfriend to be his wife for 53 years. Ron was preceded in death by his wife Jane E. Penkert of 53 years in July of 2022. Ron is survived by his daughter Ronda Penkert (Richard); his grandchildren Robert A. Harp II and Joannie Plues; his sister Raissa Federline; a brother-in-law David Lawrence (Joan); and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM in the John M. Dobrinick Funeral Home Inc., 702 7th St. (State Rt. 130) Trafford 412-372-3111. Parting prayers will be on Wednesday at 10:30 AM followed by a funeral Mass at 11 AM in the St. Regis Church with Fr. George Saletrik as celebrant. Entombment will follow in the Good Shepherd Cemetery, Monroeville. www.dobrinickfhinc.com.
