Joyce Eileen (Hunter) Hall Obituary

Joyce Eileen Hunter Hall peacefully passed away on October 27, 2024 at the age of 94. Born in Latrobe, PA, on July 15, 1930, she was the second daughter of the late Charles Wesley Hunter and Emma Mae Palmer of Derry and Latrobe, PA. She was the beloved wife of Ralph E. Hall Jr. of Trafford, PA, and was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine Marion Hunter Matthews.

Joyce was a proud mother to two sons, Mark E. Hall of New York City and Russell H. Hall of Abingdon, MD, whose recent passing is mourned by all who knew him.

Joyce lived her early life in Pitcairn, PA, where she opened the Joyce Hunter Dance School at the age of 17. A passionate dancer from the age of 3, she studied at the Mamie Barth Studio in Pittsburgh and frequently traveled to New York City for further training. Over her 45-year teaching career, she owned studios in Pitcairn, Latrobe, and Jeannette, with her final studio located in Level Green, PA. Joyce’s influence was profound; she was known for her warmth and dedication, often running into enthusiastic former students throughout the Turtle Creek Valley.

Joyce met Ralph at a basketball game where he played for Trafford High School, a local rival of Pitcairn High, where she was a cheerleader and majorette. They married in 1954 after Ralph returned from his Air Force service in England, settling in Level Green, PA. Ralph dedicated his career to the Pennsylvania Railroad until shortly before his death in 1996.

A fiercely independent woman, Joyce owned a business at a time when most women were homemakers and was the first in her family to buy an automobile at age 18. As her eldest son, I am proud to have been one of her students, and I attribute much of my career to her loving but persistent guidance. Joyce believed in the importance of dance for everyone, famously saying to family members, “It’s free. Of course, you have to take class.”

Joyce was a dedicated member of the Level Green United Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, while Ralph served as a Deacon for many years. She enjoyed writing verses and prayers that adorned the refrigerator in her homes at Beatty Pointe in Monroeville and later at Seneca Manor in Verona.

Joyce’s life was enriched by the companionship of her dear friend, Maggie Florovito, and the loving support of her niece and nephew, Jerilyn Taylor and Rob Matthews. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Sheila Kelly and Tom Basch for their generous support during this time, and for the lifelong friendship of Sheila’s parents, the late Bob and Lois Kelly.

Joyce Eileen Hunter Hall will be remembered as a dedicated educator, a loving mother, and a remarkable woman whose impact will resonate for generations to come.
