Geraldine Painter Obituary

Geraldine V. (Webber) Painter age 98 of Level Green passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.  Geraldine was born on July 4, 1922 in Brunswick, MD the daughter of the late Franklin P. and Nellie (March) Webber.  Geraldine was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and then started her education for nursing at the Kings Daughters Hospital for Nursing in Martinsburg, WV.  She then continued her education for nursing at the University of Pittsburgh in 1943.  While at Pitt she worked as a registered nurse at the university’s medical center.  After graduating from Pitt, she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education.  She then started as a nursing instructor at South Side Hospital in 1945 and then moved on to Allegheny Valley Hospital where she was the education director and instructor from 1949-1959.  She then became a consultant for Harmarville Rehabilitation Center in 1963 and in 1964 she was an instructor for Braddock General Hospital.  Geraldine ended up at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center McKeesport Hospital in 1964.  She would stay there for 33 years.  In 1971 she was the associate director of nursing education.  Two years later she was named the director of Staff development.  During that time, the hospital became fully accredited by the National League of Nursing.  In 1976 she became the assistant director of staff development and continuing education in the nursing division.  In 1988 she was the nursing director of education. She developed a program for remedial students and it helped high school students who were interested in nursing, but had low grades or low SAT scores, giving them an opportunity to still have a chance to study nursing.  Geraldine believed she could help others and she opened a school for Certified Nursing Assistants, the first one funded by a hospital in Western Pennsylvania in 1990.  After 50 years as a nurse and educator she retired in 1997.  Geraldine married her late husband Clarence Painter in 1949 and had one daughter Dr. Susan Geraline Painter, MD of Murrysville.  Geraldine was extremely proud of the success of her daughter of becoming a physician.  In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her beloved dog Angel.  She also loved and adored her late dog Sammie.  Geraldine is the last of 11 siblings.   Family and friends will be received on Friday from 3-7 PM in the John M. Dobrinick Funeral Home Inc. Trafford 702 7th St. (State Rt. 130) Trafford (412) 372-3111.  Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday in the funeral home with Rev. Gary Simpson and Rev.
