Charles Robert Newman of Trafford, PA passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Charles G. Newman and Lillian Newman DeFoe, his sister Elizabeth June Campbell and brother-in-law Bob Campbell, nephews Joe Campbell and Jeff Campbell, and parents-in-law Woody and Edith Shumate.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janice Shumate Newman, sons Daniel and Dave Newman and their wives Melinda Newman of Saline, MI and Lori Jakiela of Trafford, PA, and much-loved grandchildren, Clay, Locklin, Ella and Phelan Newman, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Chales was born on August 3, 1941, in New York City, a city he loved and was thankful to have been raised in. From the age of six, he knew how to travel the city on bus and by subway, and he spent Spring days at Cooney Island, riding the bumper cars.
He was a member and former Elder of Norwin Alliance Church.
He was a graduate of Coyne Electronics Institute in Chicago, where he was a housemate with his future brother-in-law, Gene Shumate. He was an electrician, first in the construction industry, then for Volkswagen of America and Ford Motor Company. Charles was a proud member of the UAW and a dues-paying member of IBEW for nearly 40 years.
Charles was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the United States and Germany. He was also in the Merchant Marines and sailed all over the world, stopping at ports in India, Saudia Arabia, and the Netherlands.
While living in Michigan he enjoyed volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. For years, he volunteered at his church as the Treasurer, an Elder, and helped with landscaping and groundskeeping. During his working years and during retirement, he could be counted on to help friends and family with various electrical work.
He enjoyed traveling and, in retirement, wintered in Myrtle Beach, and visited Ireland, the country of his mother’s birth. He loved spending time with his family, enjoying Italian food in restaurants, and listening to Frank Sintra and the songs he grew up with. For over six decades, he loved to dance in the kitchen with his wife.
